CHAPTER 24

One eye opened, glancing at the window in an attempt to figure out what time it was and if it was early enough to leave my room.

It's been a week since my ruined wedding. Jax had taken that week off from work, and even though he didn't seem like he was warming up to Danielle anytime soon, he was certainly warming up to the little boy, taking him for car rides to the park and playing with him.

With the way he reacted to finding out about Jason and the way he insisted that the boy wasn't his, it came as a shock to me that he was spending more of his time with him.

Heck, I'd already started to believe that Jason wasn't his, but Jax was starting to doubt that himself. Maybe he's Jason's father anyway. It still hurts either way. The pain may have gotten worse than when it all happened.

Jax had also taken some time to spend with me this past week, probably trying to rebuild whatever was left of us — of the relationship we once had, whatever it was. But it was pretty much impossible for me.

That incident had crafted an extremely huge hole in my heart, and I'm afraid his efforts can't fill up the hole. I'm afraid he can't fix it.

I studied the light seeping in through the small crack between the curtains, wondering if it was time for me to get up and make breakfast for everyone.

I've resumed my duty as the maid for the family and Davies' caretaker once again. And now the work — the responsibilities — seems even more real than it was before.

And now I have to care for Jason, too. I'm now the nanny.

Deciding that it was early enough, I forced myself to get off the bed, and a groan slipped through my lips as my body slowly separated from soft, warm comfort.

Running both hands through my hair, I tugged it lightly before gathering my hair together and typing it into a knot on top of my head.

Ignoring the fact that I was in sleepy shorts and sports bra, I walked out of my room, clumsily slipping my feet into slippers in the process.

I brushed the tiny bit of hair that didn't get in the knot away from my face as I walked past Davies' room. I refused to look in that direction as I continued. That ache I'd been ignoring for the past week returned with full intensity, my heart thumping against my ribcage.

I swallowed the lump in my throat as I descended the stairs and paused halfway as my eyes took in Jason, Danielle, and Jax sitting by the dining table. And Jason was currently sitting on Jax's lap, even as his whole focus was on his laptop.

Danielle, on the other hand, had an unpleasant look on her face as she glared at her phone, typing furiously.

I pursed my lips, walking past them without a word as I made my way to the kitchen.

"Lily? "Jax's voice stopped me halfway.
